114th Congress
Dear Friend,
Last night, President Obama addressed the nation on ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and how the U.S. will respond to this growing threat. As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, I am deeply concerned by the threat this terrorist group poses to our country and allies in the Middle East. Their acts of barbarism and extreme cruelty, including their beheading of two American journalists, show they are an organization that the world cannot ignore.

Dear Friend,
I want to hear from you. My job is to listen to you at home in the East Bay and work for you in Washington, DC. Town halls are a great opportunity to hear your views and I hope you can join me at one of my town halls this August in San Ramon or San Lorenzo.
Dear Friend,
Calling all CA-15 dogs and dog lovers! Join me for Congress at your Dog Park at Bray Commons Park this Saturday, August 9 at 10:00 AM. It will be an opportunity to chat about the issues that matter most to you and your family, learn about how my office can assist you with federal matters, and enjoy the beautiful East Bay weather with man's best friend.
Dear Friend,
In case you missed it, my op-ed ran in today's San Francisco Chronicle about how to solve the humanitarian crisis of unaccompanied minors from Central America crossing our southern border.
Dear Friend,
I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy Fourth of July. It is an honor to serve you in the U.S. Congress and I look forward to celebrating our independence with many of you this weekend at parades and events throughout the East Bay.
Here is a helpful article with information on Fourth of July celebrations around the Bay Area.
Dear Friend,
High school graduation is a special occasion for students, celebrating their hard-work and success. I recently gave the commencement speech at James Logan High School in Union City and saw hundreds of bright young students ready to make their mark on the world. For many, the next step is higher education. But, the sheer cost of today's college education can be daunting and worrisome for students and their families.
Dear Friend,
I have exciting news to share! I'm happy to report that my bill to finally name our hometown Dublin Post Office, located at 6937 Village Parkway, as the "James ‘Jim' Kohnen Post Office" passed the House of Representatives unanimously by a vote of 398-0 last week.
Dear Friend,
Every June we recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Pride Month. This year we have a lot to celebrate!
Last month the United States Postal Service honored San Francisco gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk with his own postage stamp, the first openly LGBT politician so recognized. This nationwide honor is a fitting tribute to such an important and courageous figure.
Dear Friend,
Did you know that only six cities in the world have elements named after them? Livermore is one of those cities!
Located on of the periodic table of elements, Livermorium was discovered by researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), who worked with scientists in Russia to find this new super-heavy element by bombarding curium targets with calcium at one-tenth the speed of light.
