U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) released the following statement tonight following President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress:

"We have come a long way since the depths of the Great Recession, and this is no time to go backwards. Our economy is growing, more Americans have access to healthcare, and oil prices have gone down. We cannot afford to undermine the progress we have made.

Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) will have as his guest at President Obama's "State of the Union" speech tonight an Afghan interpreter who served alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The guest, Mohammad Usafi, waited nearly four years for a special immigrant visa, Swalwell said, and has now moved to the Bay Area.

At the same time, however, House Republicans are moving closer to shutting down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) over an unrelated immigration fight with President Barack Obama.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today was sworn into the 114th U.S. Congress on the House Floor for his second term in office. He was later ceremonially sworn into office in front of family, friends, and East Bay constituents in the Rayburn Gold Room by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who administered the oath of office. Swalwell is an active member of the Homeland Security Committee.
