Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) released the following statement after today’s House Veterans Affairs Committee Hearing on Mismanagement at the Oakland VA Regional Office. Today’s hearing confirmed Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Office of Inspector General report that over 14,000 informal claims went unprocessed by VA staff.

“Our veterans put their lives on the line for our country. There is no excuse for them not to receive the care and benefits they were promised. Our veterans deserve better than to have their claims left on a shelf to be forgotten by the people hired to help them.

“I continue to expect more of our VA. Our office has helped hundreds of East Bay veterans receive benefits owed from the VA, but what our veterans need is not help from Members of Congress, they need a VA that is responsive, efficient, and accurate.  To make the VA more efficient, I also have supported efforts to improve its electronic records and coordinate more closely with the Department of Defense.

“A new Director at the Oakland VA was an important first step to resolving mismanagement issues. But, until we are certain that the Oakland VA has fully solved its management and operations problems, we will leave no stone unturned, and continue to advocate for necessary reforms.”
