Swalwell Supports President’s Fix to Keep Health Care Promise to American People

November 15, 2013

November 15, 2013 WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today voted against the Republicans 46th attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and roll back patient protections, and in support of a plan that will keep the President's promise that if you like your health care you can keep it:

"My constituents are rightfully angry that they were told they could keep their healthcare plan when that's not necessarily true, and I share their frustration. A broken health care system is not helped by a broken promise. I support the President's announcement yesterday to keep his promise to the American people, and make it possible for consumers on the individual market to keep their plans for one year. However, the Upton bill offered on the House Floor today goes too far.

"The Upton bill would undermine the ACA's new benefits and roll back badly-needed patient protections. The bill would create an insurance market of insufficient health care plans, where individuals with preexisting condition could be denied coverage, women could be charged more than men, and Americans could go bankrupt from getting sick because of lifetime caps on their coverage.

"The good news is California is a beacon of light in the rocky rollout of the ACA. Nearly 60,000 Californians have already enrolled in coverage through the fully-functioning website: CoveredCa.com. The plans available in California's marketplace all include patient protections that were not guaranteed through the broken individual market. I am confident more residents will opt to sign up for this improved coverage once they compare the benefits and price."
