Swalwell Statement on Secretary Napolitano

July 12, 2013

Pleasanton, CA – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15), a member of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement after the announcement that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will be stepping down after four years and joining the University of California system as President in September:

"Secretary Janet Napolitano has led the Department of Homeland Security remarkably and with her resignation the department will be losing a great leader and public servant. As a Member of the Committee of Homeland Security, I have been continually impressed by her ability to navigate challenges from terrorist threats to natural disasters and meet the department's vital mission to secure the homeland and protect the American people.

"But, the government's loss is California's gain, and I welcome Secretary Napolitano to our great state to lead the University of California system. I am confident she will bring her same passion and energy to directing the system's ten campuses, three national laboratories, and five medical centers, which will help us lead the world through research and education.
