Swalwell Statement on the Federal Indictment of Donald Trump

August 1, 2023

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) issued the following statement after reports that former President Donald J. Trump was federally indicted on multiple counts by the Department of Justice:

“After years of avoiding accountability, Donald Trump is being brought to justice. As a criminal defendant, Trump should be treated no better or worse than any other person accused of crimes. While he’s entitled to his day in court, the indictment makes a compelling case that the former president lied to, incited, and aimed a violent mob at the Capitol to overturn an election he lost.

“In fact, the evidence seems very clear that had Donald Trump conceded the election when major media outlets called it, when the states voted to certify the electoral votes, or when every court threw out his frivolous allegations of voter fraud, January 6 would not have happened.

“Despite Donald Trump and his supporters’ threats of violence surrounding this indictment, I have faith in our justice system and the American people. Let us neither celebrate nor destroy in the name of this indictment. On behalf of the hundreds of law enforcement officers injured on January 6, may justice be served.”
