Swalwell Statement on Drafting Articles of Impeachment
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and of the House Committee on the Judiciary, issued the following statement Thursday:
“The evidence from our impeachment inquiry is clear and uncontradicted: President Donald Trump abused his office and used your taxpayer dollars to pressure a foreign government to cheat our elections. He has left Congress no choice but to act, and I stand in strong support of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to ask the Judiciary Committee – on which I serve – to proceed with articles of impeachment.
“Our Founders did not leave us helpless against an abusive chief executive. In 1792, James Madison warned our nation that no single branch of government ‘can pretend to an exclusive or superior right of settling the boundaries between their respective powers.’ This is exactly what President Trump has attempted to do. When I came to Congress, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Today, and every day going forward, that is exactly what I intend to do.”
