Swalwell Rejects Tea Party Games that could Shut Down Government

September 20, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Swalwell released the following statement after voting against the Tea Party's bill that will either lead to a government shutdown or double down on the sequester and keep uninsured Americans from getting the coverage they need under the Affordable Care Act:

"The House Republican leadership put partisanship over people today by bringing a right-wing ideological resolution demanded by the Tea Party to the Floor for a vote.

"It continues across-the-board spending cuts, hurting communities across the nation at a cost of over one million jobs. It also takes healthcare coverage away from millions of people by blocking funding for the Affordable Care Act.

"This bill will never be passed by the Senate or signed by the President, and so we continue to approach the end of the fiscal year with no way to avoid a government shutdown that would cripple our economy.

"I hope the House Republican leadership will begin listening to the American people, who overwhelmingly oppose a government shutdown, rather than to the most extreme wing of their party. When they do, I stand ready to support a bipartisan and reasonable resolution to fund the government."
