SWALWELL REACTS TO THE STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

March 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14) released the following statement after President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress:

“In his third State of the Union address President Biden said, we have made significant progress in the past three years - putting people over politics, growing the middle class by investing in American infrastructure, and passing the most comprehensive gun safety law in a generation.

“The President made it clear tonight - our freedoms are on the line. Democrats work every day to protect our freedoms, while Republicans work to take them away. We have to make our priorities clear for the American people.

“Democrats will always prioritize a “Freedom Agenda”: Financial freedom allowing some breathing room in your pocket, freedom to make decisions about your body, freedom drop your kids off at school without worrying that they’ll become the next victim of gun violence, freedom to breathe clean air and drink safe water, and freedom to vote.

“President Biden is the leader of a party that will always defend freedom and democracy at home and abroad.

“The President shows his willingness to reach across the aisle and get the work done that so many hard-working Americans count on. But, MAGA Republicans don’t want the fix, they want the fiction. In the last year, we’ve seen this on display as Republicans fail to secure our border, threaten to cut social security and Medicare, and start a war on families, women, and motherhood.

“The work to put people over politics is not done yet. I firmly believe that under President Biden’s leadership our country can find a common ground to protect freedom and put families first.

“I was honored to bring Emily Calandrelli, an American science communicator, mother, and devoted advocate for breastfeeding mothers and parents, as my guest to the address. Emily was stopped at a TSA checkpoint and was misinformed that she would be unable to travel with her breast milk. Since then, she and I have joined forces to work on family friendly policies to better support children and families across the country.”
