SWALWELL NAMES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVOR AS VIRTUAL GUEST TO STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today announced Bay Area resident Nancy Harvey, a domestic violence survivor, will be his virtual guest to President Biden's State of the Union Address to Congress on Tuesday.
While safety protocols mean this year's in-person attendance is limited, Swalwell invited Nancy to help bring attention to the growing rates of domestic violence. Swalwell prosecuted Nancy's abuser when he served as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in 2008.
One in four women experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner and the pandemic has only exacerbated the rates of abuse. Nancy is not only a survivor, but a dedicated advocate for women and children in the community. Nancy owns and operates a child care center in the Bay Area and serves on the Negotiating Team for Child Care Providers United in the State of California.
"Domestic violence is a public health crisis in this country, and the failure of Congress to pass commonsense gun violence prevention legislation has made such a crisis even deadlier," said Swalwell. "With one in four women impacted by domestic violence, I hope the President uses his speech as an opportunity to highlight additional action his administration plans to take to protect domestic violence victims such as preventing domestic abusers from carrying firearms."
Last week, Swalwell sent a letter with 45 of his colleagues calling on the Biden administration to strengthen the effectiveness of federal and state domestic violence laws that would prohibit the possession of firearms by domestic abusers.
President Biden will deliver his State of the Union address tomorrow at 9:00 PM ET // 6:00 PM PT.
