Swalwell Issues Statement on Reports of Michael Flynn’s Contacts with Russian Ambassador

February 10, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15), the Ranking Member of the CIA Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement Friday regarding reports that National security adviser Michael Flynn may have broken the law when he privately discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia with that country’s ambassador to the United States during the month before President Trump took office:

“It’s a crime for someone outside of our government to negotiate with foreign entities on our nation’s behalf. Yet after Russia attacked our democracy in last year’s election to benefit Donald Trump, and President Obama issued sanctions, Michael Flynn spoke with Russia's ambassador five times and might have signaled to Russia’s ambassador that the incoming administration would roll back the new sanctions. For the safety and security of our nation, President Trump must immediately suspend Flynn and halt his access to classified information until a full investigation occurs.”
