Swalwell Issues Statement Regarding False News Report on Shutdown Pay

February 14, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday, a television news agency reported Congressman Eric Swalwell (CA-15) received pay during the federal government shutdown, despite pledging to not be paid. This is not what occurred.

On September, 30, 2013, Swalwell sent a letter to the House of Representative's Chief Administrative Officer asking to have any salary earned during the government shutdown withheld until federal workers who also had to work without pay, received their pay. The government shutdown began on October 1, 2013.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) informed Swalwell's office that Swalwell's salary would be placed in escrow for any pay periods that occurred while the government was shutdown. On October 16, the government re-opened, Congress voted to give back pay to all federal workers, and the federal workers were paid that month. On November 1, Swalwell was paid his monthly salary for work performed during October.
