Swalwell Calls for Vigorous Discussion on President’s War Authority

February 11, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement after the release of the White House proposed Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL):

"As a Member of the Intelligence Committee, I am acutely aware of the threat the extreme terrorist organization ISIL poses to our allies and our homeland. I've long said Congress needs to debate a new war authority. The authority on which the President now relies is out-of-date and should be re-visited by Congress.

"I applaud the President for starting this process and sending a draft authorization to Congress. As this debate begins in earnest, I will be talking with my constituents and colleagues about the President's proposal and how we can best protect our nation."
