Rep. Swalwell Welcomes Rep. Kaptur, Ranking Member on Energy and Water Appropriations, To National Laboratories in Livermore

August 6, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15) announced today that U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (OH-9), Ranking Member of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, is touring the Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories in California, located in Congressman Swalwell's district. The visit is part of a fact-finding tour of federally-funded research and development centers and other federal installations in the western United States.

"I am honored that Ranking Member Kaptur accepted my invitation to tour Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, both located in Livermore in my Congressional District," said Swalwell. "As the Ranking Member of the Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee, which has funding jurisdiction over the national labs, it is a great opportunity for Congresswoman Kaptur to see firsthand the research projects in our Livermore labs that will secure our country's national and energy security. I welcome Congresswoman Kaptur to the East Bay and look forward to working with her to ensure our labs can continue their cutting edge research."

"Livermore and Sandia continue their long tradition of promoting our national security and helping lead the way to energy independence for our nation," Kaptur said. "World-class research is underway at both centers as world-class researchers seek solutions to our biggest challenges. I hope to learn how both institutions can teach us important lessons about the power of collaboration among government, industry and academia."

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy facility that has pursued technological innovation for more than 60 years as an exemplar of federal-private partnership. Its mission is grounded in national security, including nuclear weapons science and technology, with increasing focus on energy issues. It is closely aligned with the University of California system and Ohio-based Battelle Memorial Institute is a major subcontractor.

Sandia National Laboratories is also charged with delivering essential science and technology to address challenging national security issues. Like Livermore, Sandia is a federal-private partnership that operates under contract with the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. Congressman Swalwell serves on the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and is the Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on Energy, which oversees the Department of Energy's civilian research, development, and demonstration programs that are vital in discovering clean, sustainable sources of energy. He also serves on the Committee on Homeland Security.

"I'm looking forward to working together with Congressman Swalwell on issues that affect both of our districts," said Congresswoman Kaptur.
