Rep. Swalwell Votes to Protect Americans from NSA Mass Spying Program

May 22, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) released the following statement after voting NO on the weakened USA FREEDOM Act that would allow the NSA to continue collecting Americans' information in bulk.

"Today I voted against the USA FREEDOM Act because it does not go far enough to rein in the NSA spying program or protect Americans' civil liberties. Although I supported the bill's original intent to end the mass collection of phone records, unfortunately the watered-down bill we were presented with on the House Floor would allow this outrageous surveillance to continue.

"We need real reform to truly end NSA's bulk collection, not half-hearted measures like the USA FREEDOM Act. The American people deserve a stronger bill that will ensure our individual rights are protected."
