Rep. Swalwell Praises President Obama’s Climate Plan

June 25, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15), Senior Democrat on the Science, Space, and Technology Subcommittee on Energy, released the following statement after President Obama's announcement of a climate plan to reduce carbon emissions today:

"As the Senior Democrat on the Science, Space, and Technology (SST) Subcommittee on Energy, I applaud President Obama's announcement today that the Administration will take action to slow the effects of climate change. We have a responsibility in Congress to stand as a partner to these efforts and tackle the very real impacts of a changing climate.

"I am pleased the President's plan follows California's example to regulate greenhouse gas emissions at power plants, as well as increases our investments in renewable energies and advanced energy technologies, many of which are being developed in the Bay Area. But must do more, as many in Congress have yet to wake up to the reality of climate change. In a recent SST committee hearing, despite the overwhelming science, many of my colleagues continued to deny the link between carbon emissions and extreme weather events.

"As the President said, we have a moral obligation to act on behalf of future generations to cut carbon pollution and address global climate change. We have seen the devastating consequences of hurricanes, forest fires and earthquakes, and inaction is a disservice to our planet and children who will suffer the consequences. I will continue to work within my committee and Congress to tackle climate change. We can't afford to wait."
