Rep. Swalwell Passes Amendment to Protect TSA Equipment from Cyber Attacks

July 24, 2013

Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today introduced an amendment at a Transportation Security Subcommittee markup of H.R. 2719, the Transportation Security Acquisition Reform Act, a bill that forces the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to better analyze and plan what is needed for transportation security equipment, justify its purchases and submit all of this information to Congress. Rep. Swalwell's amendment would require TSA to also ensure equipment purchased is secured against cyber theft and threats. The amendment passed by a voice vote.

"Transportation security equipment is vulnerable to cyber attacks, which we know could have devastating consequences to our economy and national security," said Rep. Swalwell. "I'm proud my amendment was adopted that ensures TSA recognizes the threat posed by hackers and nefarious actors and requires that it prioritize cybersecurity and secure its technology to protect all Americans."

The underlying bill, H.R. 2719, was adopted by the Transportation Subcommittee by voice vote.
