April 23, 2013
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today introduced legislation to name the U.S. Post Office in Dublin after the late Dr. James ‘Jim' Kohnen, a lifelong public servant of the Tri-Valley community. The legislation was co-sponsored by all 53 Democratic and Republican Members of California's Congressional Delegation. The post office facility is located at 6937 Village Parkway in Dublin.
"Naming the Dublin Post Office after Dr. Jim Kohnen is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his community," said Rep. Swalwell. "The post office in his name will serve as a source of inspiration for young people in our community to follow in his footsteps and dedicate their lives to public service. Dr. Kohnen is sincerely missed in our community and this post office will ensure that his memory lives on for generations."
Dr. Kohnen retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Colonel in the Corps of Engineers after 30 years of service. Over the course of his lifetime he earned six degrees, including graduating from the U.S. Army War College, the Air War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He completed his career as a high school teacher at San Leandro High School.
He volunteered for a variety of service organizations in the East Bay, such as the Boy Scouts and League of Women Voters. He also served as an elected or appointed official on five local boards of directors including the Dublin San Ramon Services District and the Alameda County Special Districts Association. Dr. Kohnen passed away on May 29, 2012.
