Rep. Swalwell Announces Federal Grant to Restore Wetlands in Hayward

June 13, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-15) announced that the Bay Area organization Save The Bay was awarded a $75,000 federal grant to help reach the goal of restoring 25 acres of wetlands in the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve in Hayward. The grant was provided through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Migratory Bird Conservation Commission.

The San Francisco Bay has lost 90 percent of its historic tidal wetlands after 150 years of development, which has diminished populations of fish and wildlife, decreased water quality and increased flood risks. The goal is to restore more than 600 acres of tidal wetlands at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve through removing and controlling invasive plants and establishing native vegetation, which will provide foraging and nesting habitats for birds and wildlife, and protect the local environment.

"Our bay is central to who we are in the East Bay and we must prioritize protecting it so it is healthy for the people and wildlife that depend on it," said Rep. Swalwell . "I commend Save The Bay for this grant which will help them continue their environmental leadership and important work to restore wetlands in Eden Landing Ecological Reserve in Hayward."

"We're thankful for this grant," said Donna Ball, Habitat Restoration Director at Save The Bay. "Along with our partners the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, we'll add even more critical wildlife habitat throughout the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve and involve more volunteers in hands-on restoration of the Bay shoreline."

Save The Bay is a regional organization working to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay. This wildlife restoration project and others will help to replenish the bay ecosystem, provide recreation opportunities for residents, and increase valuable habitat for endangered wildlife.
