Lofgren, Honda, Eshoo & Swalwell announce $3.4 million for Mineta San Jose International Airport perimeter security
SAN JOSE, CA. – U.S. Reps. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Mike Honda (CA-17), Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18), and Eric Swalwell (CA-15) today announced over $3.4 million in federal funding to boost perimeter security at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.
Earlier this year, the members wrote to FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta in support of increased funding for perimeter security, noting that while "SJC has undertaken numerous steps to lay the groundwork for raising the height of the airport's perimeter fence and incorporate proven technology into its perimeter fencing," the additional federal funds "would provide the airport with resources to prevent unauthorized intrusions and respond to potential security vulnerabilities."
"Our airport is the gateway of choice for travelers, airlines and businesses in Silicon Valley," said Lofgren. "I'm pleased that these important federal funds will be dedicated to keeping passengers, employees, and airplanes safe."
"This funding for improved perimeter security at Mineta San José International Airport is welcome news," said Honda. "It will ensure that our airport is safe and secure, furthering the efforts to keep the airport a hub that attracts new business and creates good-paying jobs. Silicon Valley is the epicenter of innovation and it is only fitting that our airport is on the cutting edge"
"This $3.4 million in federal funding will go toward commonsense improvements for the safety and security of Silicon Valley's rapidly expanding airport," said Eshoo. "I welcome the news that funding has been secured for the safety of the travelling public."
"With this federal grant, SJC will be a big step closer to closing security gaps that threaten passenger safety," said Swalwell. "For the past two years I have called for increased perimeter monitoring at our nation's airports, particularly SJC. I was pleased to join my colleagues in supporting SJC's request for these vital funds, and I look forward to continuing to work with them to ensure the safety of the traveling public."
The federal grant, which follows several incidents of security breaches at Mineta San Jose Airport over the past year, is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, and will fund the installation of perimeter fencing.
