Democratic leaders made the right call on making a deal with President Donald Trump on the debt ceiling and providing recovery funding for Harvey victims, said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., Friday.

"It was the right thing to do. We have to pay our bills, keep the government open and provide relief to those that were in Harvey's way," Swalwell said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Working with Trump provides "leverage" so Democrats can get other goals accomplished, the congressman said

"We have the leverage and the energy of the American people behind us, and we have a very weakened president. And so despite (Democrats) being in the minority, you will see that a majority of Republicans will vote against keeping government open, which puts us in a much better position to act on behalf of our constituents," Swalwell said.

The House of Representatives approved a bill 316-90, as part of the deal struck between Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Trump, according to CNN.
