Let's put federal employees back to work!

Dear friend,

Yesterday evening, I volunteered at the Chefs For Feds pop-up kitchen led by Chef José Andrés to serve hot meals and to-go items to federal workers who aren't getting paid during this government shutdown.

I was touched by the goodwill of the volunteers, some of whom were federal workers themselves, and the grit of our public servants. About 800,000 federal workers across the nation have been furloughed or are required to work without pay – including thousands of California workers. Many families living paycheck to paycheck are now struggling to pay the rent, pay their bills, and put food on their table.

Maybe it's not much. But even a small kindness, a helping hand, can mean a lot to these people who feel caught in the middle and forgotten. They should know that we care for them and want this crisis ended as soon as possible. These public servants protect our communities, our borders, and our coasts; they take care of our public lands and parks; they process our tax returns; they help small businesses and farmers; they serve us every day in dozens of other ways.

This week, with bipartisan support, the House passed its seventh appropriations bill to reopen the government. It is time for our colleagues in the Senate to step up to the plate, pass the House bills, and reopen the government.

As always, I am honored to represent you in Washington, DC, where I remain committed to go big, be bold, and do good to ensure every American has the freedom to dream.

Through all of this, my staff and I will be here for you. Please visit my website or contact my East Bay office at (510) 370-3322 if we can be of service in any way. To stay connected, join me on Twitter @RepSwalwell, and Facebook.
