ISIL Update

Dear Friend,

I want to update you on developments related to the growing threat of ISIL, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. As I wrote to you last week, I believe ISIL is a serious threat to the Middle East and, potentially, our homeland.

To defeat ISIL, I support airstrikes and building a real coalition with Middle Eastern allies who stand up for their countries' security.

But, I do not support using U.S. money and resources to train and equip untested so-called "moderate" Syrians, mired in a civil war of their own, to redirect their efforts toward defeating ISIL. Last night I voted against authorizing the arming and training of Syrian rebels.

Right now, there are too many Middle Eastern allies surrounding ISIL who are not willing to do enough of what is needed to achieve victory. Now is the moment to press upon them to step up, and I will work in my capacity on the Homeland Security Committee to do so.
As always, I will keep you updated as the situation unfolds and it is an honor to represent you in the U.S. Congress. Visit my website or contact my East Bay offices at 510-370-3322 or 925-460-5100 if we can be of service in any way. To stay connected, join me on Twitter @RepSwalwell and Facebook.

Sincerely,
