Back from Iraq

Dear Friend,

This past week I travelled to Iraq with colleagues on the House Committee on Intelligence to spend time with our troops and meet with top military commanders for an update on our efforts to defeat the Islamic State of the Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Frankly, the best part of the trip was Easter Sunday brunch with the troops.

This trip gave me the opportunity to see up close the toll the Iraqi-led, U.S.-supported coalition is taking on ISIL. Because of the enduring work of our troops and intelligence community, we have ISIL on the ropes and are well-positioned to deliver a knockout blow. But, the United States can only provide limited, short-term military aid to Iraq; a longstanding peaceful future requires Iraqi leadership that puts an end to sectarian violence. I will continue to oversee this operation in Congress to make sure that our efforts are working and our troops have the support they need.

After spending Easter Sunday in Iraq with my heroes, I have even greater appreciation for the brave men and women of our Armed Services and intelligence community. We are grateful for their service to our country as they spend time away from their loved ones to serve our country.
