Appointment to Leadership Position on Steering & Policy Committee

Dear Friend,

Last week, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi appointed me Vice Chairman of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. This committee, of which I've been a member since November 2014, sets the Democratic policy agenda and nominates Democratic Members for committee assignments.

I'm honored and humbled by her trust, and I see this as a great opportunity. It's a way to keep the issues I've tackled through the group I chair, Future Forum – such as student loan debt, college affordability and millennial entrepreneurship – at the forefront of the Democratic to-do list, and it gives me a louder voice in shaping the rest of the caucus' message.

But it's also an opportunity for you, my constituents. I hope you'll keep sending me your ideas and opinions, so that I can put them to my fellow Democrats on this influential committee and push harder for the things you find most important.

This week, at my first committee hearing as Vice Chairman, I heard testimony and asked questions of witnesses, including Flint, Michigan's mayor and schools superintendent, about the toxic drinking-water crisis facing that city's residents, particularly the thousands of children who are especially susceptible to lead poisoning. It's a heartbreaking emergency caused by years of mismanagement, and House Democrats intend to pursue a swift and decisive solution.

It is an honor to serve you in the U.S. Congress. Visit my website or contact my East Bay offices at 510-370-3322 or 925-460-5100 if we can be of service in any way.
