Medicare Deadline Approaching!
Tomorrow is the last day seniors can sign up for a Medicare health plan for this upcoming year. Please note, if you are covered by Medicare, you do not need to enroll in the Covered California Marketplace created by the new health care law. However, since Medicare plans may change annually, you may want to evaluate your health plan and prescription coverage for 2014 before Saturday’s deadline.
I have heard many questions about how the new health care law affects Medicare. Thanks to the law, many preventative services are now free of charge and Medicare will cover a higher portion of prescription costs. Additionally, seniors can receive an annual wellness checkup without a copay. A recent Contra Costa Times article has more information about Medicare open enrollment and how the new health care law affects Medicare coverage.
If you have any questions regarding your eligibility for Medicare or your current plan, you can contact the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program for Alameda County at 510-839-0393, Contra Costa County at 925-602-4163, or their general phone line at 1-800-434-0222.
