WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15), the Ranking Member of the CIA Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement Thursday regarding the Trump administration’s lifting of sanctions against Russian intelligence officials:

“Russia attacked our democracy. It should be punished. Instead, President Trump is easing sanctions against its team of hackers, the FSB. Easing these sanctions allows Russia to sharpen its knives and import tools from the United States to hack us again. Congress must act swiftly to re-impose these sanctions so that those who attack America know there’s a price to pay.

“The President’s action once again underscores the need for an independent, bipartisan commission to fully investigate and report to the public and Congress on Russian involvement in the election, as called for by the Protecting Our Democracy Act, H.R. 356. Letting this information languish in darkness emboldens our enemies and leaves a cloud hanging over the White House – especially when it takes actions like today’s.”
